CENTURY EXTRUSION PROVIDES EQUIPMENT TO SUPPORT
CANADIAN BIOMATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

June 18, 2009

TRAVERSE CITY, MI—Century Extrusion, a leader in extrusion technology, announces the sale of a twin screw extruder to the Alberta Biomaterials Development Centre in Alberta, Canada. The extruder will be used to process biomaterials—which include natural substances such as wood chips and wheat straw—and will be a crucial component in researching the development of sustainable products.

The twin screw extruder, which uses a specialized co-rotation method to produce a consistent mix, will enable the Alberta Biomaterials Development Centre to bridge the technical processing gap between raw materials and a usable product. To respond to the increasing demand for environmental goods like biomaterials, the Centre aims to take dedicated fiber crops and residual wastes from forestry and agricultural practices and convert them into value-added products. “The Century Extrusion twin screw extruder will increase our biomaterial processing capabilities as we work to bring advanced products and sustainable solutions to market,” said Trevor Kloeck, leader of Biomaterial Development for Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. ”It will be a great asset as we utilize Canada's natural advantage in biomass to develop new economic opportunities for agriculture in the areas of biomaterials.”

The Century Extrusion twin screw extruder is an ideal tool for the biomaterials industry; with its ability to process materials of different types and densities, it is able to handle the variations in raw material required for bioproduct development. “We are proud to provide the technology that will assist the Alberta Biomaterials Development Centre in their efforts to develop innovative uses for biomaterials,” said Charlie Spearing of Century Extrusion. “Our extruders will add great value as the bioproduct market expands to meet the demand for sustainable, environmentally-friendly products.”
